Two weeks after Hurricane Sandy, New Yorkers are still in need. The official death toll rose to 43, and the storm caused an estimated $50 billion in property damage and economic losses in the Northeast. • Someone had to provide some well needed distraction from our woes: Leave it to James Bond to take us on a thriller of a ride. Skyfall opened this past weekend to a Bond-record-breaking take of $87.8 million.

More than 2 million New Yorkers are without power as of this writing. Frankenstorm was a doozy, no question about that. If you were like many of us social media addicts, you were following the blow by blow on Twitter and Facebook. Even without power, New Yorkers found a way to keep their phones charged and connected via Twitter. You gotta hand it to her, she’s a great salesman. 26 year old Lena Dunham sold her latest project to Random House after bidding reached as high as $3.7 million. Entitled, Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned, Random House describes the collection of essays as frank and funny advice on everything from sex to eating to traveling the world, but will it be good enough to break even? • First Virgin America Airlines, now Ruth’s Chris Steak House: Alexis Maybank, co-founder of Gilt Groupe appears in another ad, this time for Ruth’s Chris.
• It’s been much talked about for a while, but Art.sy finally made its official debut. Dasha Zhukova and Wendi Murdoch are among the backers of this new formula for the online and offline art world.
• You can’t visit Miami without seeing artist Romero Britto’s work gracing much of the city’s public forums. Read about his global licensing empire in the Miami Herald and his latest foray into baby car seats.
• Serena Merriman and Marcus Alvarado tied the knot this past weekend in Rhode Island.
• Twitter item of the Week: Author Jay McInerney uses Twitter to alert all his fans that he will be appearing in a cameo on tonight’s Law & Order SVU. (Jay will also be signing books at Morell & Company, One Rockefeller Plaza, tonight from 6:30pm to 8pm.)
• Happy birthday TODAY to interior designer Celerie Kemble and Papermag’s Mickey Boardman. TOMORROW to Robert Stilin and Nicholas Dietz. FRIDAY is the birthday of Vanessa Noel. It’s 34 days until the Presidential election and tonight is the first debate (9pm EST). Obama prepared by practicing with Senator John Kerry, and Romney practiced zingers. Tonight’s topic is domestic policy, and look for interesting outcomes in how the debate gets covered in social media. • Attention Minkettes: Rebecca Minkoff has launched a new jewelry collection.
• A snippet of Adele’s new James Bond theme song that leaked on the Internet was only 90 seconds long, and it took Sony Pictures not much longer to get YouTube to take it down.
• Twitter item of the Week: The birth of Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer’s baby boy is announced by her husband via Twitter, and then she turns to crowd-sourcing for name ideas.

As the New York Post put it, “Is nothing sacred in this town?” New Yorkers are nervous to talk in cabs after a hack recorded Paris Hilton talking about gays and released the tape on the Internet. Of course, you may not be lucky enough to get a taxi driver who isn’t busy illegally talking on his phone himself. It all sounds too reminiscent of HBO’s “Taxicab Confessions“. The place to be last night in New York was at the New Yorkers for Children Fall Gala at Cipriani 42. The Fall Gala is NYFC’s annual fundraising event to benefit young people in foster care in New York City. New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck was honored, as well as Estee Lauder’s John Demsey. Sotheby’s Jamie Niven led a lively auction that even photographer Billy Farrell couldn’t resist - he bid a generous $1,500 to help supply a laptop and printer to a student in foster care. Go Billy! And va va voom to the ladies dressed to the nines including Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, Wendi Murdoch, Hilary Rhoda, Selita Ebanks, Lauren Remington Platt, Aerin Lauder, Dani Stahl, a 6-months pregnant Marisa Brown, and many many others.
